We are happy to offer patients both amalgam and composite dental fillings. Schedule an appointment to discuss your options.
TYPES OF DENTAL FILLINGS
AMALGAM FILLINGS
Amalgam (sometimes known as silver fillings) is a combination of metals that provides a durable option for larger dental fillings. This material is designed to withstand the constant pressure from chewing. This type of filling is ideal for back teeth. Amalgam is a commonly used and safe dental material, however many still wonder about its mercury content. We want to assure patients that there are different types of mercury. The type used for fillings is not the same as mercury that can build up in fish and cause health problems. Also, when combined with other metals, usually copper, silver, and tin, it forms a safe and stable material. If you have any concerns about having cavities filled with amalgam, speak to your doctor and discuss the possibility for a composite dental filling.
COMPOSITE FILLINGS
Composite, commonly known as white or tooth-colored, fillings are a more natural looking alternative to silver amalgam, and is ideal for small to mid-sized fillings and great for the teeth visible when you smile. While not as durable as amalgam Composite fillings can sometimes cost more, and coverage is determined by your insurance company. If you prefer white over silver dental fillings, you can discuss this option with your doctor.
PREVENTION OVER RESTORATION
Ideally, the prevention of cavities is better than any resin or metal filling. We want to remind patients that the best way to prevent cavities and other dental issues is to brush and floss regularly, keep up with routine cleanings, and bring up any concerns to your doctors at your check-ups. We encourage any patients who have questions about routine dental maintenance to visit our page focused on dental hygiene.
